A drill press is a vertically fixed machine which stands on the floor, and therefore it is larger than the bench drill. To get it working you start the drill and gently lower the drill by means of a handle.

The bench drill press does the same job but it has a shorter pillar and is attached to a bench so that it does not fall over. It is more compact and is more suitable for the home user.

Pillar drills can be used for making holes in many different materials such as wood, plastic and metal. There are also other optional uses such as a jump sander.

Why use a pillar drill

Many people ask why spend the money in buying a pillar drill when you can use a regular hand drill.

Well, there are many reasons. The most important is it gives you a straight hole, so it is perfect for doing really precise work. Using a hand drill will not give you a completely straight hole every time.

Pillar Drill Press Safety

Before operating a pillar drill you must read the owner's manual carefully and also make sure you are properly trained and understand the instructions.

Injuries can include amputations or laceration from rotating drill bits that can pull in gloves, loose clothing or hair.

You should follow these 6 safety precautions BEFORE operating a drill press.

  1. Wear your safety goggles and proper shoes BEFORE entering the workshop. Do NOT wear loose clothing, jewellery or gloves.
  2. Inspect the drill press for any broken parts or oddities.
  3. Keep the work surface and the area around the drill press clear of scraps, tools and materials.
  4. Ensure that the start and stop buttons are within reach.
  5. After mounting the drill bit securely, remove the chuck key, otherwise it can fly off while the drill press is in operation and cause severe injury.
  6. Use a clamp or vice to secure your item to the table to avoid it from spinning during drill press operation.
